In one 16-week study of 87 women aged 40 to 65, daily collagen combined with vitamin C measurably improved dermis density, skin texture, and wrinkle severity compared to placebo — with roughness and wrinkles decreasing by more than 9% and 13% respectively.
A separate 12-week trial using confocal microscopy — a more precise imaging method than visual grading alone — found a significant decrease in collagen fragmentation in the skin of participants taking a collagen and vitamin C supplement daily.
The detail most people miss: it’s not just collagen
Here’s the part that rarely makes it into the marketing: many of the positive trials paired collagen with vitamin C specifically — and researchers increasingly think that pairing is what’s driving the effect. Vitamin C is a required cofactor for collagen synthesis in the body; without adequate vitamin C, collagen production genuinely stalls, regardless of how much collagen you’re taking in. One trial explicitly noted that studies testing hydrolyzed collagen without added vitamin C tend to show weaker, less consistent results.
In other words: collagen alone may be the less important half of the equation.
